2008–09 S.L. Benfica season
The 2008–09 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 105th season in existence and the club's 75th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. It involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga and the third qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by coming fourth in the previous Primeira Liga.
Quique Flores was hired as coach. Benfica ended the Primeira Liga in third place, despite leading the league in January, failing qualification for the UEFA Champions League, for a second time.
In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the sixth round losing to Leixões on penalty shoot-out. In the Taça da Liga, Benfica won the second edition against Sporting CP, the first of four in a row.
In the UEFA Cup, Benfica beat Napoli on the first round and qualified for the group stage. In the group stage, they lost 3 times and ended in last.
Spanish coach Quique Flores was not given renewed confidence for the upcoming season.
